Talisman is a funded web3 start-up building a wallet for the multi-chain future. We are founded by Australian web3 / crypto veterans and exploring the technically complex and exciting frontier of Polkadot and Kusama.

We are looking for a highly competent and accountable generalist to take on an operations role with lots of potential growth. Since Talisman is a funded, pre-revenue start-up, much like the caterpillar enters the chrysalis and emerges a butterfly we must develop a product offering which creates value for our users or die trying. Generating value or revenue will allow us to establish sustainable cashflows or solicit future funding and continue our journey, thus working at Talisman is a real opportunity to create something rather than just a “job”.

If you join the Talisman team you will directly impact the success or failure of the organisation. If you are successful in the role, after a probationary period you will be offered ownership in the project proportional to the importance of your responsibilities.

We have a very small core team (currently <10), thus this role is suited to highly entrepreneurial people who can handle shifting responsibilities and adapt as our organisation evolves. Start ups are chaotic and we have to determine our own priorities, this role would be best filled by somebody who has an aptitude for creating and leading new initiatives. Here’s a good twitter thread on what to expect from working in an early stage start-up: which illuminates what we would expect from you.

Must Haves

  • Crypto Native - You are a web3 early adopter who already owns cryptocurrency, has experience utilising DeFi and intends to deepen your involvement in the web3 ecosystem regardless of whether you get this job.
  • Highly Online - You are capable of utilising different software tools to solve problems. You have experience with, or a natural aptitude to quickly learn the latest tools for online collaboration. (Figma, Notion, etc)
  • Post-Truth Kid - You can competently learn online in a self-directed manner, you also reject the myth that traditional institutions have much to teach us about the future.
  • Understand Leverage - You do not wait to be told to learn something, explore your surroundings or take responsibility for something. You proactively seek to understand how you can make the most important contribution and get started.
  • Gigabrain - You have a capacity to learn and apply new knowledge which is better than most of your peers.

Nice to haves

  • Short Stack - You have experience with one or more programming languages and have applied them in the past to solve problems and create things.
  • Rabbit Holer - You have deep knowledge of web3 technologies and how blockchains work, specifically the Polkadot project.
  • Corporate Trauma -
    • You are incredibly tactful and professionally aware. You can intuitively understand when external stakeholders expect you to wear a certain mask of professionalism and you wear it well.
    • You understand who is incentivised to help our organisation and who is not, you act in an intellegent manner to get the job done.
    • You know how to compile data into frameworks and models in order to make good “decks”.
  • Charming - You’re memorable and fun, you tell good stories and have natural magnetism.
  • MBA or equivalent - You have an MBA or some experience as an operator of a business with cashflows.
  • Founder Trauma - You’ve been a founder or early employee of start-ups previously.
  • Chinese Language - You can speak or write Mandarin

Areas of Responsibility

  • Help us know things - We have recently established some initial measures for project which are likely to evolve over time. These measures relate to our community growth and happiness, digital traffic and understanding how our core software product is being used. You will be responsible for the collation of that data and have the opportunity contribute to the interpretation of it and the strategic decisions we make.
  • Boring Admin & Ops - As we are a crypto business we must develop internal processes in order to comply with evolving rules and regulation and deal with annoyances like banks closing our accounts. We also have to do boring stuff like run payroll and procure things. Using automation or outsourcing, you will make sure these forces don’t interrupt our core goals and arrest our development.
  • Cool Admin & Ops - We are building software in a decentralised ecosystem, this fundamentally means we self-organise differently with our stakeholders, pay and incentivise people with crypto and deal with internet anons. You will help to define processes and systems to make all of this work.
  • Community Stakeholders - Crypto projects are community first, that means our community are our investors, contributors and users. Collaborate with the community and ensure they have the support they need and we know what they’re up to.
  • PR, Comms, Brand - We are doing lots of stuff worth talking about, help to ensure we talk about it. Help us to publish more to our various channels like Twitter, Discord, etc. Liaise with PR people and Media whenever we create and share a particularly interesting story and help us get onto panels and conferences so we can flap our lips and promote our project.
