And, of course, these are just US deaths that are known to be attributable to COVID-19. Worldwide, that number is over one-and-a-half million.

The CDC is also looking at what it calls "excess deaths," the difference between the total number of people who die in a given period compared to the number of deaths to be expected given historic trends and population growth. These "excess deaths" include people who were known to have died from COVID-19, AND people who died and were never tested for COVID-19, people who died of other causes who didn't seek out medical care because of fear of exposure to the novel coronavirus, etc.

Do we count these "excess deaths" among the COVID-19 dead? I don't know. What I do know is that the CDC found that there were nearly 300,000 "excess deaths" in the United States died from late January to early October while the official U.S. COVID-19 death count stood at about 220,000.
