The Aziz Fellowship is intended for people from a Muslim background. You must be a British citizen or have the right to work in the UK long term prior to applying.

The Fellowship

As a Bureau Fellow you will be immersed in the organisation and allocated to an individual project such as Bureau Local, Environment, Big Tech, Global Health or Enablers. You will gain first-hand experience of working on investigations and can expect to play a meaningful role in the reporting process. Tasks may include: interviewing experts; conducting research and writing briefs; writing copy; drafting FOIs and R2Rs; collecting and analysing qualitative and quantitative data among other things.

In addition to working on investigations, Fellows will have learning opportunities to expand their knowledge and confidence in the essentials of journalistic practice including: identifying a story, pitching, developing and protecting sources, structuring articles, and fact-checking. Some of these elements will be learned through directed instruction and others through the reporting process.

Through observation, participation and instruction you will come away from your time at the Bureau with hands-on experience working as an investigative journalist and with a better understanding of how to approach and produce investigations.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours per week) post for six months from the beginning of Spring 2022.
  • The salary is equivalent to the London Living Wage.

About The Bureau

This is an exciting time to join the largest not-for-profit news organisation in the UK at a crucial point in the organisation’s growth and development. You can read more about us here. We operate differently from newsrooms that engage in a rolling news cycle. Our investigations can last from weeks to months rather than hours or days.

What Are We Looking For In A Fellow?

We want someone who is excited by the opportunity to work in a collaborative newsroom with a focus on rigorous and ground-breaking investigative journalism that drives impact and positive change. You will thrive in a team and bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the organisation. The Fellowship is ideally for someone interested in a career in journalism.

Skills & Qualities

This is an entry level position intended for those with little or no experience in journalism. We don’t require candidates to have undertaken a journalism degree however you must show some evidence of a commitment to journalism – articles for the student paper or journals, blogs, films or podcasts etc.

To Apply

Please provide us with the following through our application form:

  • a cover letter outlining why you want to work for The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and what unique perspectives and skills you could bring to the placement
  • links to a few key samples of your writing, journalism or investigations you have worked on
  • a short summary of career experience, qualifications, and education – You can extract this information from your CV

You should submit your application no later than Friday 25th February 2022. We envisage selecting a fellow in March 2022 with the fellowship beginning in April 2022. Our intention is that this fellowship will be based in our office but there is flexibility and details will need to be confirmed nearer the time in line with relevant Covid restrictions.

The Bureau is committed to being an equal opportunity employer. We strive to create a diverse, inclusive and adaptable environment where people are encouraged and supported to do their best work. We welcome applications from those belonging to groups traditionally under-represented in the media.

Email fellows@tbij.com if you have any issues in applying. The Bureau is unable to answer specific questions on the individual fellowships and cannot offer any other work experience opportunities. Please mention Journo Resources when applying, it really helps us out.
