Anyone so inspired by Ryan Petersen should definitely read The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt. It was a 1980s bestseller, a fictional book about a manufacturing plant that illustrates the concept of primarily thinking through these types of problems in terms of flow and constraints and bottlenecks. Also, The Phoenix Project and Unicorn Project are modern versions of The Goal, except for software development, and also worth a read if that is your interest.

Maybe that is the answer to the open question - a book like The Goal used to be popular, but is now a bit less known, but Ryan Petersen has maybe demonstrated that we should be instilling and teaching that kind of thought more generally.
