Teen girls sentenced for violent D.C. carjacking with stun gun that led to Uber Eats driver’s death

Two teenage girls have been sentenced to juvenile detention until they turn 21 for their roles in a gruesome carjacking that led to the horrific death of an Uber Eats driver in Washington, D.C.

The 14-year-old and 15-year-old girls attempted to carjack 66-year-old Mohammad Anwar, a Virginia resident, in March after they asked him for a ride near Nationals Park baseball stadium, according to D.C. Metropolitan police.

Cellphone video of the incident appears to show one of the girls in the passenger seat and the driver’s side door open as Anwar hangs out of the car partially. Someone, likely the 15-year-old girl, inside the car hits the gas pedal and the car speeds off. After traveling down the block and colliding with a tree and several parked cars, the car flipped onto its side, tossing Anwar to the pavement.

As the videographer catches up to the scene, the two girls hop out of the car from the passenger side and are detained by two National Guardsmen who were on the block.

Both girls were arrested on murder and armed carjacking charges, but the 14-year-old, who was 13 years old at the time of the March incident, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The 15-year-old girl pleaded guilty to felony murder. The older girl was sentenced last month and the younger girl was sentenced Tuesday.

Both received the maximum sentences juveniles can receive.

“He was a hardworking immigrant who came to the U.S. in 2014 to build a better life for himself and his family. The loss for his family is immeasurable,” Anwar’s family said in a statement to NBC 4 Washington.
