I am having a side project since a few years ago ( Open Lowcode framework), in parallel to my daily job. I started it at a very busy time in my life (young children).

Maybe the most important thing was finding a problem I was passionate about. Actually, I suffered every day at work from bad and expensive products, and I thought I had the skills to do better. So I just started putting effort in it. Maybe finding a problem you are passionate about should be the first step, not just creating a side project for the sake of it.

As a side effect, I almost stopped playing video games, and I do not think the time spent with my family suffered.

Yeah. Finding a problem, or even just anything, that you are passionate is a huge step to keep motivated and focused.

If you are interested in making money out of it would be equally important to understand if this is a problem others have and whether people would willing pay for.

I like the "Ikigai" concept to describe this visually. - Ikigai it is a Japanese term that roughly translates to “reason for being.”

Here is a great article on the topic https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrismyers/2018/02/23/how-to-find-your-ikigai-and-transform-your-outlook-on-life-and-business/#60bb55b82ed4

Happy creating!
