Me - It’s not that people are not using Excel sheets and Google sheets but having a web app or a SaaS gives more control with better tracking and automation.
Negative Nancy says - “Why use APIs for sending Text Reminders? I can just send recurring reminders using Twilio APIs”
Me - Right but you still need to write a lot of code on when to call Twilio API as Twilio will only send a text. Twilio will not schedule a text. Most APIs for Text Reminders will help you schedule the texts without writing a lot of code.
Deep-dive & Some niches
High-end customers onboarding flow: High-end customers need special touch-points. These touch-points or extra care will make them feel privileged and helps them understand the SaaS by providing better onboarding steps. See Arrows.To for inspiration. Create a Micro-SaaS solution around customer onboarding to automate a lot of these tasks. Solutions like these will help understand how many end customers are stuck at what stage of onboarding and with automated reminders end customers can move forward with the onboarding process. Solutions like these are extremely helpful for high-paying SaaS customers and for SaaS that has a complex onboarding workflow.
Text reminder APIs: Many vendors provide text messaging (SMS) capabilities. For example, Twilio is one of the popular platforms that provide APIs to send text messages. However, these providers don’t have any mechanism to schedule a text message. Create a Micro SaaS that helps customers schedule and send text messages. Create an API that customers can use by passing parameters like ‘Send To’ mobile number, text message content, and ‘schedule time’ as parameters. Make sure you send a unique message-id in response so that customers can use this to cancel scheduled messages. Instead of asking for customers Twilio/any other providers keys to send the SMS, make sure your SaaS supports everything out of the box so that customer doesn’t need a separate account with other providers. SaaS solutions like this need to have enough capabilities to create reports around the number of text messages sent during the duration and need dashboards to see scheduled messages. You can do the same with Whatsapp and Telegram APIs as well by scheduling messages to these platforms.
Text scheduling/reminders API that runs on Twilio/other providers: This is the same as above except that in this case, your app would use the customer’s Twilio/any other provider keys to send the messages. This is specifically useful for customers who want to use specific platforms to send SMS messages. Some customers will have regulations around the provider to send the SMS messages. In these cases, the customer needs a tool to just schedule the messages with the provided API keys from Twilio or other vendors. Make sure to support as many vendors as you can inside your SaaS solution. For example, some other vendors that can be supported are Nexmo, Kaleyra, etc.
SaaS to manage recurring Workflows/Process/Tasks: Managing recurring tasks is never easy. When you have to do the same task several hundreds of times, it consumes a lot of time without proper tracking and automation. For example, this recurring process could be a process that needs to onboard new employees. Whenever a new employee joins an organization, there is a sequence of steps that need to be followed. Listing these steps as a part of the process and assigning the tasks to various departments/persons needs a lot of automation. Create a Micro SaaS tool around these recurring workflows/processes/tasks automation. Customers should be able to create the main process/workflow and create individual tasks as part of this main process and assign them to different people. Automated emails based on task creation/completion and sending emails to assigned folks should all be part of the Micro SaaS solution. See Process.st for inspiration.
SaaS to create simple checklists: There are tools to create tasks and manage tasks. For example, there are many project tracking tools. But creating a recurring checklist of tasks to accomplish something is not possible with project management tools. Create a Micro SaaS solution around just creating “simple checklists” for various tasks. Let people publish these checklists as “private” or “public”. For checklists that are published as “public”, make sure they are discoverable on your platform via a search. Over a period, the platform becomes a “Wikipedia of checklist” for most common tasks. On the other hand, the “private" checklists will be accessible to the folks that are shared and invited to access the checklists. Public checklists will help you with SEO. Some examples of public checklists are - “How to start building a SaaS?” , “How to start applying for developer jobs”, “How to start learning to draw painting?”, “How to start learning AWS Cloud?” etc. Users should be able to attach videos, Youtube links, Udemy courses as part of these checklists.
