Negative Nancy says -Β βI will be vendor locked with drag and drop website buildersβ
Me - No. In most cases, you will be able to export the final HTML/javascript and CSS files. Most website builders provide this facility at least in paid plans.
Negative Nancy says -Β βI will be able to learn better by building a website by myself.β
Me - Learning is different from building a business. Automated drag and drop website builders save time. If time is not a constraint and your goal is to learn, build your website on your own.
Negative Nancy says -Β βI may not get the website UI that I want to buildβ
Me - Possible. Website builders may not solve every problem. If you have a complex UI/home page and that needs manual work, website builders may not fit. But they can still act as a starting point and you can add code on top of what you can do in website builders.
Deep-dive & Some niches
Headless eCommerce store builders:Β Create a website builder forΒ headless e-commerce stores. For starters, a βheadless e-commerce storeβ is a back-end-only e-commerce solution that can be plugged into any front-end. By creating a niche website builder around headless e-commerce stores, you can help users create their own front end of the store easily just by using the WYSIWYG editor. Provide add-ons to connect the front-end to various headless e-commerce stores likeΒ Shopify Headless StoreΒ andΒ StoreHippo. To improve this, also create auto-generated eCommerce mobile apps for the eCommerce store built on the website builder. Headless e-commerce is gaining a lot of traction and has 4400 searches per month on Google.
Niche Website builder for Church websites, Real estate websites, Doctors websites, etc:Β Create a website builder that's purpose built for a specific niche. For inspiration, seeΒ TheChurchCoΒ making $60K MRR in similar lines. You can think of several niches that can work around this. A sample example is a website builder that specializes in Church websites. (See more in the next sections on how to target these users). Other possible use cases are website builders for real estate agents, accountants, doctors, event planners, etc. Also see JobBoardSheet for another example.
Website builder for Podcasters: Create a website builder for people who run Podcasts. The website builder should provide all the things required for running and playing podcasts. Make sure the website builder also supports SEO as most people rely on SEO for traffic. To start with you can just build the website automatically with the RSS feed or just a list of Podcasts from the customer. As the product grows, you can add more functionality of hosting the entire podcast files also via your Micro SaaS. Add more tools to trim, edit, translate Podcasts. Start small and bring all the tools required for Podcasters into one single platform. But start with a simple website builder first for people who run Podcasts. See Podsite for inspiration. Podsite is currently at $1200 MRR in a short span.
Website builder for Notion:Β NotionΒ is getting increasingly popular and also recently released APIs to access Notion pages/data. To give you a rough estimate, there are 1500K searches on Google for βNotionβ. Build a website builder that can be connected to Notion by Notion API keys and helps users build an entire website from Notion contents. Notion API is still in private beta access but starting something with Notion at this point is going to gain a lot of traction.
Website builder for Google sheets:Β Create a website builder (GUI - drag and drop builder) that runs on Google sheets. The website builder should be able to query Google sheets and display the data from Google sheets on websites. As an additional add-on, provide a user sign-in/sign-up mechanism for protected sites. Build website builders that support more complex use cases like - selling a locked list of data.
Airtable websites:Β Create a website builder (GUI - drag and drop builder) that runs on Google sheets. But note that Airtable APIs are slightly different than Google sheet APIs. Airtable APIs have more restrictions on the number of rows returned per query. So, you would need a better-caching mechanism to avoid multiple queries for the same visitors.
Website builder that helps build and sell courses:Β Create a website builder that helps users build a βcourse sellingβ platform. Users should be able to create their own courses, upload videos for video courses, attach user authentication, provide billing functionality. Users should be able to select various authentication platforms like Google SignIn, Auth0, Facebook Sign in, etc. Also, support for the normal sign-in/signup process as well. The final built website should be able to be connected to a custom domain so users can use this as a white-label platform and use it. For a course platform, reports around the number of students, courses are important too. As additional features, provide rating and review system as well. Also, create a marketplace around this so that all the published courses built using the platform can be also sold on the marketplace for additional revenue.
