The EOS Community raised $132,989 across 75 grants from 1022 contributors during Pomelo Grants Season 1! With a $500,000 matching pool provided by the EOS Network Foundation and 1,000 EOS ($2,880) from the .gems Pomelo NFT series, that’s a total of $635,869 for Public Goods in the EOSIO ecosystem!

The Pomelo team has carefully analysed the results for compliance with the Pomelo Terms and have recommended some minor adjustments to the matching pool distribution. During the donation period, there was one grant disqualified over conclusive evidence of quid pro quo. In addition, two grants were retired by their authors. The matching allocation for these projects has been re-allocated proportionally to qualified grants. Another grant was investigated for reports of quid pro quo, but the evidence was not conclusive enough for the Pomelo team to recommend disqualification.

Based on analysis conducted following the donation period, the Pomelo team has identified several instances of collusion among some of the donors. This doesn’t necessarily mean that affected projects were malicious. The Pomelo team has recommended collapsing the donations of colluding donors so that each group counts as a single donor. As a result, some grants will receive a slightly higher matching allocation, and others will receive reduced matching allocations.

A detailed analysis of the evidence and the proposed distribution is outlined in this report. Qualified grant owners will receive emails with instructions to complete KYC and claim matching allocations.

Quid pro quo

Offering a “quid-pro-quo” type deal involving a benefit to a Grant Donor in exchange for their contribution to a specific project is prohibited in the Pomelo Terms and Conditions.

In the case of an explicit bribe where “smoking gun” evidence is presented, the Pomelo team takes action immediately to remove the grant from the matching pool. In cases where bribes are not as explicit, we present the evidence to the community for feedback to inform our policies for future seasons but do not remove the grant from the matching pool.

Hu-Fi Movement — Disqualified

Hu-Fi Movement was disqualified early during the Pomelo Season 1 donation period after the Pomelo team found conclusive evidence the Grant Owner was participating in quid pro quo by offering 2 EOS in return for every 1 EOS donated to the grant. The grant was banned from receiving further donations and its matching pool allocation was redistributed proportionally to the remaining grants.

Evidence of quid pro quo:

  • The EOS Detective Donation Graph for Hu-Fi Movement shows clear evidence that 32 of the donors were funded by a single account belonging to the Grant Owner, The EOS Microloan team.
  • The EOS Microloan team publicly advertised a promotion to pay 2 EOS for every 1 EOS donated to their grant.
  • The payments made from the EOS Microloan team to accounts that made donations to their grant included memos referencing the Pomelo grant donation.

Immersys — Flagged for community feedback

Immersys was flagged for advertising and distributing NFTs to all accounts donating to the Immersys grant. The NFTs don’t promise any benefit to the holder and have not established any value on the secondary market. The Pomelo team believes this type of behaviour falls into a grey area, but it has the potential to easily move into blatant bribe territory depending on how the market values the NFTs and how the advertisements were perceived by the donors who saw them. Immersys has not been disqualified at this time, but the Pomelo team will consider community feedback and adjustments to our guidelines for future seasons.

Evidence of quid pro quo:

Sybil Attack and Collusion

The Pomelo terms prohibit the creation of multiple Pomelo accounts by the same entity or individual to facilitate multiple donations to one Project (also known as “Sybil attacks”). Similarly, it prohibits the coordination of multiple donations by essentially the same individual or entity to one Project, including but not limited to, having one individual or entity provide funding to several other Pomelo users to then use in providing contributions as Grant Donors to the same Project.

The Pomelo team did not find evidence of blatant participation in sybil or collusion attacks by any Grant Owners, but it did find evidence of collusion among some donors. Donations from multiple donors that were coordinated from shared pools of funds have been identified and collapsed to count as donations from a single donor. Grants that received some of their donations from colluding donors have had their matching allocation reduced, while grants whose donors did not share this behavior had their matching allocation increased.

Pomelo

Hu-Fi Movement —

Immersys —

Sybil
