Landry Shamet signs 4 year extension with the Suns

The long wait is over for the Phoenix Suns fan base and their player drafted in 2018. The bag has been filled and he is now locked up for 4 years in purple and orange.

No. Not that 2018 draftee.

Suns’ guard Landry Shamet received a rookie contract extension for four year, $43M on Monday.

Shamet was originally drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with their 26th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the same draft that both Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges were taken by the Phoenix Suns. Following 54 games in Philly, 78 games as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers, and 61 games with the Brooklyn Nets last season, Shamet came to the Suns on a draft day trade that sent Jevon Carter and the 29th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Landry Shamet has yet to play a regular season game with the Phoenix Suns, but early preseason returns are that he will be an ideal fit next to Cameron Payne (who also received a new contract this offseason) as he serves as backup to All-Star guard Devin Booker.

The contract, which averages out to $10.8M a year, is a solid signing by James Jones as it provides Shamet with certainty while allowing the Suns to have flexibility moving forward. It is a trade-friendly contract that, if a situation presents itself to improve the team and/or Shamet does not meet expectations, Phoenix can use in a deal.

I have been very high on Shamet entering this season and look forward to the continual offensive capability the Suns now possess with his addition. The role he will fill in Phoenix coincides with what will allow him to be successful. He will not have to play a small-ball three role as he did in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, rather, he can run off screens in a JJ Redick fashion and hit open jumpers.

Now if only the Suns could have extended all of their 2018 draft class members. That, my friends, is another story...
