The Atlanta Dream have suspended guard Chennedy Carter until further notice due to what the franchise said Monday was "conduct detrimental to the team."
Carter, the No. 4 pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, was a standout at Texas A&M who was draft-eligible as a junior and opted to go pro.
Last season, she averaged 17.4 points and 3.4 assists as a rookie, but missed six of the Dream's 22 games in the WNBA bubble because of an ankle injury. She became the youngest player in league history to score at least 30 points in a game by getting 35 in August 2020, then at age 21 years, 9 months.
This season, she's averaged 14.2 points and 3.3 assists, playing in 11 of the Dream's 17 games. She suffered an elbow injury on May 29 and didn't return to game action until June 23.
The Dream lost 118-95 at Las Vegas on Sunday. Carter, 22, started but played just 5 minutes, 34 seconds, and then did not return. Coach Mike Petersen said afterward it was not because of an injury, but something the team was "dealing with," without giving details.
Petersen, who had been a Dream assistant, took over as head coach when Nicki Collen left in May to take over the Baylor women's basketball program.
The Dream have two more games -- Friday at Connecticut and Sunday at home -- before the All-Star break and the Olympics. Atlanta then will return to action Aug. 15 at Phoenix.
At Texas A&M, Carter averaged 22.5 points and 4.1 assists. She was the espnW freshman of the year in 2018.
