OriginTrail has announced the intent to integrate its multi-chain Decentralized Knowledge Graph (DKG) on Acala, the DeFi and liquidity hub of Polkadot. The integration will put OriginTrail’s global mesh network of indexable assets (real world and digital) and data into the hands of developers in the Acala ecosystem. OriginTrail comes with years of experience in supply chain and decentralized systems, as well as partnerships with Oracle, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, British Standards Institution (BSI), and the Scan Association (including The Home Depot and Walmart). OriginTrail has previously deployed its technology on Ethereum, Polygon, and xDAI.

Meet OriginTrail

OriginTrail is like Google for Web3. In the same way Google crawls the internet to form connections and associations between websites and metadata, the DKG creates the same connections and associations between all of its accessible physical and digital assets. Application developers can then use this vast network of information to build knowledge about specific assets into their apps.

Many organizations are adopting this decentralized technology instead of similar centralized solutions due to a hesitance to trust one organization with their data and reluctance to share competitive data with a third party. OriginTrail’s DKG solution has served as a catalyst for cooperation among competitors in, for example, its work in the European Union’s railway system. In fact, this drive for decentralization among its customers is one of the primary reasons OriginTrail shifted from a centralized supply chain data company to forming a Decentralized Knowledge Graph.

Bringing a knowledge graph to Acala developers

OriginTrail is entering the Polkadot ecosystem in a variety of ways. The core team has been working directly with Parity Technologies on a Substrate “pallet” for the DKG. This will essentially create a DKG “lego” that any Polkadot parachain can integrate by simply upgrading their chain (without the need to fork).

Acala will integrate with OriginTrail in a variety of ways throughout both the Acala and OriginTrail ecosystems:

  • Bridging the TRAC token to Acala for a potential listing as an accepted fee token, as well as giving any DApp on Acala the ability to integrate TRAC (money markets, DEXs, etc.)
  • Integrating the OriginTrail Substrate pallet into Acala’s parachain, enabling any DApp developer to leverage information from the DKG
  • Integrating OriginTrail smart contracts into Acala’s EVM+ development environment
  • Integrating Acala’s aUSD stablecoin into the OriginTrail ecosystem to be used by network participants, node operators, and other use cases

This integration will enable a plethora of use cases that combine Acala’s economy of assets with OriginTrail’s queryable and indexable network of assets. OriginTrail can access information about assets on other blockchains and even off-chain, physical assets. This could unlock use cases such as collateralizing real world assets like stock portfolios or IRAs for minting a stablecoin loan, querying real world events for use within prediction markets, or querying for a real estate property based on a verified attestation from one of OriginTrail’s data suppliers.

Implementation Plan

Acala’s expected launch date on Polkadot is December 18, 2021. Acala will begin rollout of its layer-1 blockchain platform as well as its products: aUSD decentralized stablecoin, EVM+ environment, liquid DOT staking (LDOT), and Acala Swap, an AMM-style DEX. All of Acala’s products are built into the blockchain itself so that developers in the Acala EVM+ can leverage the liquidity and functionality out of the box. Following Acala’s launch rollout, Acala and OriginTrail will begin working through the various integrations detailed above. At the same time, OriginTrail also has plans to launch their own parachain on Polkadot. We look forward to supporting OriginTrail’s effort to win a parachain slot auction in the near future.

OriginTrail Parachain on Polkadot

Additionally, to seamlessly integrate with Acala’s economy of assets, OriginTrail plans to further the network effects made possible by the OriginTrail Decentralized Knowledge Graph through deployment on a Polkadot parachain. This purpose-built parachain will allow for enhanced overall robustness and increased utility of the OriginTrail DKG as it moves forward into a semantic web3 ecosystem powering the next generation of physical and digital assets. About OriginTrail

OriginTrail is a neutral protocol enabling trusted data sharing between companies, organizations, and blockchains primarily driving supply chain sustainability. End-to-end information is shared and secured in a fully decentralized knowledge graph network, with TRAC token used as both a stake (to keep data holders/creators honest and data immutable) and a payment (to compensate data holders for their time and resources). TRAC is currently utilized by a community of OriginTrail node runners, multinational corporations, international standards bodies, the EU government, and public institutions. The OriginTrail developers have also solved the problem of companies buying and utilizing cryptocurrency via enterprise software and exchange integrations.
