Job Description

The Product & Engineering team at Her Campus Media is responsible for building and maintaining the engines that power our organization.  If you want to be able to build really cool online experiences that enable thousands of GenZ writers to share their stories, then come join our growing team. 

Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Supporting & extending custom built Content Management Systems (CMS) & website written in Ruby on Rails & Node.js that powers SpoonUniversity.com

  • Supporting & extending WordPress installations powering HerCampus.com and CollegeFashionista.com;

    • this will include contributing to existing open source plugins and building custom WordPress plugins for Her Campus Media

  • Helping to optimize the front end code to ensure optimal performance and passing scores on Core Web Vitals

  • Working on systems to aggregate data to provide analytical insights to the company

  • Continuing to extend and refine the CI/CD process for our systems

  • Extending automated testing & monitoring into our code base

  • Building custom integrations with 3rd party services like CloudFlare, Digital Asset Management systems, Google Ad Manager, New Relic, etc.

  • Being a trusted technical expert for the product team and architecting creative solutions that let the company scale in our content delivery and support for thousands of student writers

  • Customizing event marketing sites built on Squarespace with advanced functionality via javascript & css

  • Generating ad-hoc reports to support sales, marketing & management

  • Being an escalation point for end user issues with the CMSs that power the HCM sites

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of actual development experience with at least one modern web scripting language 

    • PHP or other web scripting languages required

    • Front end development experience (modern CSS & JS practices)

    • Ruby on Rails experience highly valued

    • A true polyglot will be considered a top tier candidate

  • Understanding of the key areas that matter to consumer facing websites such as Core Web Vitals, SEO, audience measurement & remarketing, etc.

  • Comfort with relational database technologies (MySQL, PostgresSQL, etc)

  • Familiarity with non-relational database technologies (MongoDB)

  • Experience with modern development tools (GIT, CI/CD, Cloud servers, etc)

  • General exposure to project management, sprint planning, testing plans, QA checklists and other ancillary development tasks

  • Ability to troubleshoot bugs in production and get to the root cause

  • Excellent written & verbal communication especially when explaining complex technical topics to lay team members and end users

  • Willingness to learn new skills and roll up your sleeves to pitch in where help is needed

NOTE: Her Campus Media is a remote friendly company! If the applicant is not in the Boston area this role will have the opportunity to travel to the Boston office to collaborate in-person once a quarter.

Interview Process & Expectations

We intend to move quickly to finalize a hire. You can expect 2-3 rounds of interviews, including an initial phone screen, a programming / technical test with the Director of Engineering and subsequent interviews with the wider Product & Engineering team.
