JURGEN KLINSMANN has resigned as coach of Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin after only 10 weeks in charge.

Appointed in late November on a deal until the end of the season, the former striker is returning to his initial role on the club's advisory board.

In a statement released on Facebook on Tuesday, Klinsmann revealed that he had lost trust in certain people at Hertha.

He wrote: "We were on a very good path in a relatively short time, and thanks to the support of many people, we are now six points away from the relegation places despite mostly difficult games.

"I am firmly convinced that Hertha will achieve their goal - remaining in the Bundesliga.

"As head coach, however, I also need the trust of the people involved in this task, which has not yet been completed.

"Unity, cohesion and focus on the essentials are the most important elements, especially in a relegation battle. If they are not guaranteed, I cannot exploit my potential as a coach and therefore cannot live up to my responsibility.

"Therefore, after much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that I would give up my position as head coach of Hertha and return to my original long-term role as a member of the supervisory board."

With the German in charge, Die Alte Dame won three and drew three of his ten games.

That included victories away to Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, as well as points against high-flying Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach.

He also faced questions about the validity of his coaching licence, to which he replied that there was "no problem".

They currently sit 14th in the table, six points clear of the drop zone.

The job was ex-Tottenham hero Klinsmann's first in charge of a side since he left the United States national team in late 2016.

He told fans on Facebook: "I would like to express my sincere thanks to all players, fans, coaches and employees of Hertha for their support in the past ten weeks.

"This time was extremely exciting for me and brought many interesting new insights. The club and the city have grown dearer to my heart."
