Apple Introduces 37 New Emojis Including A Pregnant Man; Netizens Are Not Happy

Apple rolled out its iOS15.4 update with 37 fresh new emojis that has created a rift amongst the users (and non users alike). The tech giant introduced emoticons including a ‘pregnant man’ and a gender neutral person with a crown. The pregnant man emoji is now available in all skin colours. The update released in March has drawn criticism, mostly from the conservative circle. Most users are appalled by the company’s shift in keeping in vogue with gender neutrality and fluidity as ‘woke’ appeasing.

While the debate rages on with triggered salty conservatives, few took it with a pinch of salt mocking it as ‘fat shaming’, calling it a' beer belly’ and ‘dad bod.’ Greg Gutfeld of Fox News wrote “One small step for the beer guts. But What’s next?”

Even as the mockery continues, some have other concerns too

The Unicode Consortium updated Unicode 14.0 with all these new emojis in September 2021 to be rolled out in various devices. The updates added 838 characters including 37 new emojis. ‘Melting Face’, ‘Pregnant Person’, ‘Troll’, ‘Biting Lips’ etc made the final cut of a draft list. Check the complete Unicode 14.0 list of new emojis here.

The emojis were first introduced in the Apple devices in Jan 2022 as an optional update. In its latest 15.4 update the company introduced additional features like 1) Using FACE ID with Mask, 2) Alternate voice update for SIRI, 3) Digital IDs, 4) Emergency SOS support, 5) Improvement in Apple Card Widgets, 6) Improvements in personal automation, 7) New filter options in Podcast 8) Share Play option in Share Sheet, 9) Live text integration, 10) additional camera options etc. Yeah, all these updates! Nice! However the bone of contention will always be how you represent (or misrepresent or not represent) my ideology and worldview in pixels.

Let's sum this up the whole discourse with this tweet
