HIROSHIMA, Japan -- When the protagonist theater director in "Drive My Car" accepts a residency here to produce an Anton Chekhov play, he is given a room at an old inn with a magnificent view of the Inland Sea.

With Ryusuke Hamaguchi's critically acclaimed film now nominated for the best picture Oscar, that inn -- Kangetsu-an Shintoyo -- built at the end of the Edo period on a small island has become a quiet tourist attraction.
