E-concession model is taking luxury retail by storm. And many are about to be caught off guard. 2 major announcements were made in the past 10 days that should keep some multi-brand retailers' CEOs awakened at night in the upcoming months. LAST WEEK Kering's CEO (the world's second-largest luxury group) was quoted by Tamison O'Connor from The Business of Fashion : "We’re stopping all online wholesale. Now, Kering brands will only remain on multi-brand platforms via e-concessions, where they retain ownership of inventory and exert greater control over pricing, product mix, and presentation." AND TODAY FARFETCH announced they were going after beauty, competing for head to head against SEPHORA, Ulta Beauty, Space NK, and Cult Beauty among others. The luxury marketplace makes no secret about its gigantic ambitions in the high-margin luxury beauty market which is totally relevant as regards its global luxury lifestyle destination positioning. ... SO is this the beginning of the end for the wholesale cash cow which powered online lifestyle consumption in the past decade??? Guido Schild provided one year ago a nuanced answer to that question in an article called "Future in Brand Wholesale Distribution: The Cash Cow is dead. Long live the Cash Cow." If wholesale is definitely here to stay for a few decades more, we can expect more and more powerhouse brands (and not only luxury ones) to take back control by reducing their investment in wholesale partnerships and go full steam D2C via their own e-commerce or external e-concessions/marketplace platforms.
