Job Description

Who We Are:

Conversations are the heart of the Twitter product. The position is a unique intersection of ML application (what is a high-quality conversation? How do we learn this from data and use learned patterns to rank?), product development (How do we take into account consumer and producer needs), and software engineering (handling one of the highest throughput systems in the world). In addition to this core responsibility on a mature product, you will also be able to work on 0-1 initiatives (like small startups within Twitter, e.g., spaces, communities). You would be the only Senior Staff ML IC leader in a ~200+ engineering organization, bringing ML to these new 0-1 initiatives. We work on some of the world’s most highly-scaled distributed systems, utilizing in-house Twitter systems and cloud providers, to handle hundreds of millions of Tweets, DMs, LIVE, Spaces, etc and engagements every single day.

What You’ll Do:

The Senior Staff role is an IC leadership role, roughly equivalent to a “director level” engineer. In this role, you’ll be responsible for setting technical direction, shaping our engineering culture, identifying and adopting best practices, designing effective partnerships, mentoring and coaching our technical leads, and more. You will be a technical leader with substantial autonomy who will work to enable effective collaboration, high velocity execution, and technical excellence across the whole of the Content organization.

You will work at all layers of the stack with a focus on backend and partner closely with technical leaders and senior management across all of engineering, data science, research, product, and design. You will define and drive technical vision and strategy, help our product engineering teams stay ahead of the curve of the constantly evolving development ecosystem, and ensure that feature development at Twitter is both fast and fun.

Within Content Foundations, you will be responsible for guiding the organization as we define our tech strategy for the next 3 years, developing infrastructure and abstractions to improve product iteration and ensuring resiliency and scalability. While you will certainly spend plenty of time contributing directly to the codebase, you will also focus on using your creativity, problem solving, and technical skills to empower the engineers around you to do their best work. You will work with several teams within foundations org with expertise in machine learning, back-end, and front-end. You will have an impact on enriching conversations on Twitter via building end-to-end product features.

Who You Are:

You are an experienced senior IC engineering leader with extensive experience identifying problems, coming up with technical solutions, and driving projects to completion. You care about culture, mentorship, collaboration, and partnership just as much as you care about coding, architecture, and technical design. You have a strong customer focus, you are comfortable with ambiguity, you can drive alignment, and you make thoughtful data driven decisions. You care deeply about quality, are energized by partnership and collaboration, and you strive to enable others around you to excel.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
