MLSS (Midland Langar Seva Society) is a multi-award-winning, multicultural non-profit organisation that strives to help those in need around the UK and internationally regardless of race, religion, and background.
The charity was founded in October 2013 by Randhir Singh and his life-long friend Parmjit Singh in Walsall, West Midlands, UK. The charity started off by providing 50 hot meals per week to those living on the streets, schools, safe houses and those on the poverty line.
The charity now provides over 150 thousand hot meals per month alongside many other amazing projects both in the UK and abroad.
In October 2013, Randhir Singh decided to set up MLSS as a non-monetary, food only donation charity to provide langar to those facing food poverty, with his life-long friend Parmjit Singh. Having seen the plight of the homeless people on the streets of their hometown – Walsall – Randhir and Parmjit felt they wanted to do something to help those less fortunate. On their first feed, they provided 15 hot meals to the homeless in their hometown of Walsall.
They continued to do this every week and steadily the number of people they were feeding grew. Within 3 months their seva (selfless service) had expanded to other towns and cities close by, with the help of a growing number of volunteers.
Now MLSS serve over 16 cities across the UK
MLSS operates on a Sikh based ethos, where we help and support all people regardless of social status. Our mission is to create a world with no barriers; a world where everyone has appropriate access to food, water, warm clothing and shelter. To strive to support service users with mental health services, rehabilitation support and education.
Sharing with those less fortunate than ourselves (Vand Chakko) is one of the core principles of Sikhism. ‘Langar’ and ‘Seva’ are also at the core of what we do and we truly believe in serving humanity to build a better future for all.
What is LANGAR?
The word “Langar” is the term used in the Sikh faith for a general or common kitchen / canteen where food is served for FREE, without prejudice, judgement, regardless of race, religion, and background.
What is SEVA?
The term ‘seva’ means selfless service. It involves helping others in a variety of ways, without any reward or personal gain.
By following our core values, we want to change people’s lives for the better. To show our service users that they are not alone and are cared for, providing them with hope and building healthier minds. We want to tackle poverty head on and inspire all communities to come together as ONE.
Langar was started by the 1st Guru of the Sikhs, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Guru has become the second most travelled person in history, stating we must be focused on the One at all times and live and practise by the truth. There are 3 Golden Rules that Sikhs must follow.
- Naam Japo – Remember God at all times.
- Kirat Karo – Earn an honest living
- Vand Chhako – Share what you have with others
At MLSS we strive to follow the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the nine Gurus that followed. All teachings can be found in Guru Granth Sahib Ji eternal Guru.
