It's official, Spotify's Duo Mix is going for good. By the end of May, the company is sunsetting the feature. But what does this mean for Premium Duo users? And what alternative does Spotify have in store?

Here's everything you need to know.

Spotify Is Sunsetting Duo Mix

After launching Duo Mix in mid-2020 as part of its Premium Duo plan, Spotify is officially discontinuing the feature. Duo Mix was a key feature of Spotify's Premium Duo plan that let the two members have one custom playlist that combines their music tastes.

However, starting May 23, 2022, Duo Mix will no longer be available, according to an email and an in-app notification sent to Duo subscribers from the streaming company.

What Next for Spotify Users?

Duo Mix was excellent, and Spotify is not letting that idea disappear for good. According to the company, a new feature that offers a similar experience but is more versatile will be replacing Duo Mix. That feature is known as Blend, which Duo Mix primarily inspires. Spotify's Blend allows you and your friends to combine your musical taste into a single playlist that you can listen to together.

Sure, the underlying concept of blending musical tastes is anything we haven't seen before, but Blend has slightly different working mechanisms. First, Blend allows you to invite up to 10 friends to create an automatically generated playlist that collates all your music tastes. On the other hand, Duo Mix was only available to two people who share a Premium Duo plan—you could not invite someone to your Duo Mix.

Besides, you can create a Spotify playlist using Blend regardless of whether you're a premium subscriber or a free user. This was not possible with Duo Mix as it was exclusive to Premium Duo subscribers. Finally, Blend playlists are updated daily, while Spotify updates Duo Mix every week. With that said, Blend is essentially a better version of Duo Mix. You can listen to Blend playlists the same way you access personalized mixes on Spotify.

Spotify Made the Right Call Discontinuing Duo Mix

Duo Mix is going away, but Spotify has already figured out an alternative. Blend has been available since August 2021, allowing every user to create a personalized "blend" playlist with their friends. The utility of Blend surpasses what Duo Mix offered. It makes sense that Spotify wants to remove Duo Mix for good.
