Spark Capital is adding a Venture Operations leader to our team to help our partners in service of founders.

Spark is a multi-stage venture capital firm that takes risks on exceptional founders and the products they design. We manage a little over $6b and have offices in San Francisco, New York, and Boston. Spark-backed companies include Twitter, Discord, Coinbase, Niantic, Oculus, Plaid, Cruise, Warby Parker, and tumblr.

Role:

In this role, you'll work closely with our general partners to help incubate new projects, analyze new markets, and be a liaison to founders.

The right person for this role will enjoy working at multiple altitudes, from one day helping take an internal project from 0 to 1, to helping a founder hunt down a candidate, to thinking through the strategy of a new market and researching the startups in that space.

This will be a role learning about the business of venture at Spark, navigating new markets, new technologies, and new initiatives. This role is a balance between high level strategy and deep detailed execution, and ideally is a career-defining role for the right person.

As a manager of Venture Operations, you will be:

  • Managing, prioritizing and tracking new investment opportunities
  • Conducting research and investment diligence
  • Initiating and leading special projects (building internal products and programs)
  • Researching new markets, including but not limited to web3, consumer marketplaces, gaming, the future of food, and frontier technologies.

This position is not:

  • An associate or investment-track position. This is an opportunity to get involved with the process of investing in and building great companies.
  • A role in sourcing companies or outreach to founders. Rather, you will assist internal initiatives, prioritize incoming deals, and support founders.

The right person could come from a wide variety of backgrounds, from a business ops generalist who wants a rare window into the VC and fundraising side of the business, to an aspiring founder who wants to see across the startup landscape, to a project manager who is a self starter and excited by how today’s founders can shape the future.

In addition, the ideal person will have:

  • 2-5 years working experience at a startup or company adjacent to the startup ecosystem
  • Working knowledge and general strong interest in new technologies, markets, and trends. We enjoy spending all day talking about this — so need to have a passion for it.
  • An empathy for the founder journey. There is nothing like being a founder, and we have the opportunity to work with exciting, ambitious companies where every bit of help can make the difference.
  • Deep curiosity. We are looking at new markets and companies all the times. Curiosity drives much of the process.
  • Self starter in their DNA. There is no playbook, there is invention and innovation in every aspect of the work.

We are a small team by design, seven early stage partners. That means we all enjoy operating at all altitudes, and you’ll need to cultivate as much love for the details as the big picture. Sometimes the task is high level strategy on a market. Sometimes it’s data entry and responding rapidly to an email. Satisfaction in all kinds of the work will matter. In return you’ll get to work with at the frontier of new markets with some of the most exciting startups in the world.

This is an opportunity to work directly with the general partners at a top-tier venture fund, on both internal and portfolio company-related projects! Would highly recommend this for anyone looking to get exposure to early stage venture.
