Spotify announced plans for a higher-quality audio tier in February 2021 during its ‘Stream On’ event. “Later this year we’ll be launching a new subscription offering, Spotify HiFi,” said co-head of music Jeremy Erlich during the online presentation, which enlisted Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas to promote it.

Nearly a year later, though, and there is no sign of the tier despite (or, perhaps, because) Apple Music adding hi-res music for no extra cost, and Amazon Music lowering the price of its own HD tier in response.

Spotify hasn’t discussed the delay to Spotify HiFi publicly, but now a moderator on its community forums has.

“We know that HiFi quality audio is important to you. We feel the same, and we’re excited to deliver a Spotify HiFi experience to Premium users in the future,” explained their response to a thread discussing the delay. “But we don’t have timing details to share yet.”

With the path to charging more for a hi-res tier seemingly closed off by rivals, the extra time may be needed for Spotify to figure out how to differentiate its HD offering.
