One year into Spotify’s presence in Trinidad and Tobago, the audio streaming platform is now bringing its carnival concept Carnival Sounds to the market.
With Soca playlist takeovers and curations, Spotify aims to expose the genre and the original carnival culture to a wider audience through its Caribbean hub.
Over the Carnival period, Kes Dieffenthaller and Patrice Roberts are taking over the Carnival and Massive Soca Hits playlists with tracklists chosen by themselves, whilst Soca Bashment, Island Pop and Soca Classics are curated by Spotify’s editorial team.
Since Spotify’s launch in T&T, both Dieffenthaller and Roberts can also boast a placement on the top list over most played artists in the country during the past year – as well as the list over most played Trinidadian artists outside of the country.
The data also unveils the emerging genres that are seeing more consumption on the platform, with steelpan being one of them that has grown nearly 30 per cent since Spotify’s launch.
Since launch, 380 000 playlists have been created by users in the market, and they tend to include the words “soca”, “vibes”, “love”, “chill” and “dancehall”
