‘We don’t whisper anymore’

A new publication featuring the people behind several women’s crisis centers in Pacific islands was issued this past week to coincide with the “16 Days of Activism.”
“We Don’t Whisper Anymore” features the stories of women from Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Kiribati and other parts of the Pacific — though it is primarily focused on the Micronesia area.

The publication was supported by Australian Aid/Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development.

It features brief comments from Daisy Alik-Momotaro, executive director of WUTMI, and the heads of the Kiribati Women and Children Support Center and Chuuk Women’s Council — the latter, Kiki Stinnett, who died unexpectedly last Friday in Chuuk.

The publication talks about violence against girls and women, and what island women and the crisis centers are doing to respond to the problem.

Marshallese telling “herstory” includes Daisy, Kathryn Relang, Hilda Heine, Candida Kaious, and Marie Maddison.

The publication also contains a chronology of events related to women’s issues in the RMI, FSM and Kiribati. Items related to the Marshall Islands from We Don’t Whisper Anymore’s chronology follow:

1984 — WUTMI established
2006 — RMI ratifies Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
2011 — Nitijela adopts Domestic Violence Prevention and Protection Act
2014 — National study on family health and safety conducted
2015 — Community Engagement Study conducted, leading to design of the Violence Against Women and Girls support service in RMI
2017 — WUTMI opens Weto in Mour program on Majuro
2021 — WUTMI opens a branch of Weto in Mour on Ebeye.
