“Hired a specialist, only to fire him 😢 ” I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard something like that! It's a common story: hiring a specialist too soon and having to let them go. But specialists are important! So when exactly do you pivot from hiring generalists to bringing on specialists? The answer depends on where you are on the startup rollercoaster. At Fibr, the early days were all about versatility—our first hires were versatile talents capable of jumping from software development to customer support to sales—sometimes all in one day! However, as we began to find our footing, the game changed. We encountered challenges that demanded specialized skills. For instance, our UI was functional but not exceptional. Similarly, our AI outperformed many models but truly quantifying and refining its superiority required a specialist. Need for specialists can signal that you're nearing PMF. When customers consistently ask for improvements or easier ways to use your product, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to bring in experts. However, timing is still critical. Hire a specialist too early, and you risk spending resources without return. Wait too long, and your growth may hit a wall. The key is simple: listen to your customers and team, understand your startup's core needs, and be honest about your team's current capabilities. Back in 2019, my voter ID was still registered in my hometown, and the thought of updating it felt like a massive hassle amidst my tight deadlines and professional commitments.
