Covid News: Delhi on Sunday reported 1,083 fresh COVID-19 infections with a positivity rate of 4.48 per cent and one death due to the disease, according to the health department. On Saturday, the national capital had reported 1,094 COVID-19 cases, its highest daily spike since February 10, with a positivity rate of 4.82 percent and two fatalities.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he has discussed the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol in a call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Zelenskyy said on Twitter that he “stressed the need for immediate evacuation of civilians from Mariupol, including Azovstal, and immediate exchange of blocked troops” in Sunday's call with Erdogan. He noted that the call came before Erdogan's planned conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Court sends Mevani to one day judicial custody; will hear bail on Monday
A local court here on Sunday sent Gujarat Independent legislator Jignesh Mevani, arrested from the western state by Assam Police on Wednesday for a purported Tweet against the prime minister, to one day's judicial custody, a police official said. Hearing in his case, including his bail petition, will be taken up on Monday, he added.

Veteran Congress leader K Sankaranarayanan passes away at 89
Senior Congress leader and former Governor of various states K Sankaranarayanan passed away at his residence here on Sunday, family sources said. He was 89. Sankaranarayanan was the Governor of Maharashtra, Nagaland and Jharkhand. He had also held additional charges of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Goa as Governor. The senior Congress leader was a four-time legislator and had held Finance, Excise and Agriculture portfolios in various ministries in Kerala.
One hurt in mysterious explosion in J&K's Rajouri
One person was injured in a mysterious explosion in Jammu and Kashmir's border district of Rajouri on Sunday, officials said. The explosion took place at Budhal-Shahpur in Kotranka area outside the house of Preetam Singh around 8 pm, a few hours after the conclusion of a marriage function there, they said. A police party has rushed to the spot and the cause of the explosion is being probed, the officials said, adding the injured was shifted to hospital and his condition was stated to be stable.

Voter turnout in the second round of the French presidential election has reached 63.23 per cent as of 15.00 GMT, the French Interior Ministry said on Sunday. Polls opened at 6.00 GMT on Sunday in France, where the final second round of presidential elections is taking place. Emmanuel Macron, the current president, and Marine Le Pen, the right-wing National Rally leader, are fighting for the right to lead the country for the next five years. According to the ministry, this year's turnout as of 15.00 GMT was lower than in the last two presidential elections at the same time.
Punjab CM urges Centre to relax norms for shrivelled grains
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday urged the Centre to relax norms for shrivelled grains in the purchase of wheat from the state without imposing any value cut. Wheat growers in Punjab have reported drop in crop yield and shrivelled grains because of the early onset of heat wave. Mann said he had personally spoken to Union Home minister Amit Shah and Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal and requested them to allow the relaxations based on the field data collected by the teams deputed by the government of India.
Mumbai clocks 73 new COVID cases in last 24 hours
Mumbai reported 73 new COVID cases in the last 24 hours, said the health bulletin by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai on Sunday. With this, the active caseload in the city stands at 521. As many as 55 COVID patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours taking the total number of recoveries in the city since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,039,203.

Encounter breaks out in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama
An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Sunday, police said. Based on specific inputs about the presence of militants in Pahoo area of Pulwama in south Kashmir, security forces launched a cordon and search there, a police official said.

After imposing stringent rules upon the Afghan civilians, the Taliban have now segregated weekdays of male and female university students, at two institutes to put an end to co-education. In a bid to end co-education, the Taliban Ministry of Higher Education has announced the allocation of specific days in a week for male and female students to attend universities separately. This diktat, for now, will be followed at Kabul University and Kabul Polytechnic University, reported Khama press. According to the new timetable, three days will be assigned for the female students of the universities where no males will be allowed. Similarly, the other three days will be appointed solely to the male students where no presence of a girl is permitted.
