A Wall Street Journal bestseller

Named one of 10 Best New Management Books for 2022 by Thinkers50

Creating a culture of learning and growth.

Growth is the goal. Helping people develop their potential—enabling them to articulate and become the self they want to be, are capable of being, and that best serves them and others in the short and long term—is what we as individuals and leaders strive toward.

But how do we grow? It turns out it happens in a predictable way, which means we can understand where we are in our growth and chart a way forward. In this compact, complete guide, Whitney Johnson dives more deeply than ever into the S Curve of Learning so that you can envision how growth happens and direct yourself and others in your organization to create a culture that fosters it.

The growth and learning journey comes in three phases: the Launch Point, the Sweet Spot, and Mastery. Compelling examples of successful people will show you when and why growth is slow, how to keep going, what to do when growth and learning are almost too fast to keep up with, and how to leap from one growth journey to another.

As individuals grow, so do organizations and societies. Growth is learning put into action—action that betters the world as we better ourselves and our small niches, both personal and professional, within it. Growth occurs when learning is internalized—when we try something new and invest the effort to move it from being something we do to something we are.

A Practical Guide to Cultivating Talent and Business Growth
This book provides a practical roadmap for organizations looking to grow sustainably by focusing on their most valuable asset—people. Kahnweiler explains how fostering an environment of development, trust, and collaboration can lead to both individual and company-wide success. Drawing on research and real-world examples, she outlines strategies to nurture talent, develop leadership, and create a culture that drives growth. What I found most valuable was how actionable the advice is. Whether you’re a leader, manager, or someone looking to influence positive change within an organization, the steps Kahnweiler presents are clear, practical, and grounded in real-world experience. Smart Growth is a must-read for anyone looking to grow their team, improve their leadership, and scale their business.

One of the best parts of the books is the anecdotes of fascinating persons and their career transitions that Whitney has collected and narrates spellbindingly. Astrid Tuminez grew up with no electricity, running water or toilets to graduate with a Ph.D. from MIT and run a major university. Mark Rowe was filming a sewer inspector when a lateral line exploded deluging him with thumb sized cockroaches and raw effluvium. That footage eventually earned him millions of dollars in the TV series "Dirty Jobs".

The S-Curve is a depiction of how careers are created. There is the explorer phase in which you are not sure what you want to do or be and are looking at options. Perhaps many options.

In the collector phase you have some clarity and are looking for data and information that will help you decide if you want to commit. In the accelerator phase you have made the decision and are gaining experience and expertise. Soon you are in the metamorph phase where it becomes easier for you to perform at high levels and then you move to the anchor phase where you have pretty much gained mastery. And then you become a mountaineer where you begin all over again in a new job/career/occupation.

Many, perhaps most, successful professionals have multiple S-Curves in their lives. This includes Whitney herself who morphed from being a top ranked analyst to world renowned executive coach.

The framework is simple. Two things make Whitney's book valuable: First, she gives a great framework to analyse each phase and where you are and what you can do to accelerate your progress. For example, in the explorer phase it is crucial to ask yourself if what you are contemplating fits your identity. Does it really align with how you see yourself and how you would like to show up?

Second, Whitney is always conscious that success is a team effort. All your team members - and their team members - also have S-Curves and it is your job to shepherd them along as efficiently as possible. And there are lots and lots of tips on how you can transmit this knowledge. You have to listen to your sweet-spotters, be available to them, cultivate team spirit ad ditch your ego.

Not easy, but it becomes more manageable with Whitney's help and guidance.

    Good luck to you.

The acute insights in this book first hit you in the first line of the first paragraph of the first chapter: "Growth is our default setting." And the powerful, compelling truths just keep coming, page after page.

Consider the implications of that initial sentence. What is says is that you were born to grow. To learn, develop, succeed. That's how you are engineered at birth. But it is immensely helpful to have clarity on the common human pathway we follow in our becoming. Smart Growth portrays that route--the several stages we go through in pursuing our ambitions, how it feels during each stage, the predictable risks and challenges we encounter, why they confront us, and how we can proceed successfully.

Ironically, we've all traveled this pathway many times. It's how we became who we are. Yet we fail ourselves too often, simply for lack of a model that could help us grasp where we are and why we might be struggling, or coasting, or unsure what to do next.

Whitney Johnson is a hellava writer. Her stories are many and truly superb. I'm tempted to do a hard count of them, just to see how many shining anecdotes and examples she has given us.

Bob Dylan sang a line that says, "He not busy being born is busy dying." Whitney Johnson gives you the formula to keep forever "being born."

I ordered Smart Growth well before its release date because I'm always inspired by Whitney's writing. My recommendation? Buy the book.

Whitney Johnson has clearly expressed that no matter who you are, where you came from, where you live, or what you do, if you want progress - the S-Curve of learning applies to you. She adeptly points out that growth is our default setting! We are responsible for making our own life decisions - but we achieve very little by ourselves. To help us - she carefully helps us learn how to increase our capacity to grow ourselves and others.
She articulates a clear outline where one can commit to the S-Curve map with 3 explicit phases of disruption to jumpstart one’s growth journey, and, model personal, team, and organizational growth. She includes well thought out tactical summaries at each phase so leaders can help their team and organizational grow using the outline.
She summarizes that learning is the oxygen of human growth, when learning diminishes so do we. This book carefully takes you through a clear and cogent map of growth and learning which benefits many! I highly recommend this book!

Whitney does an amazing job putting together a framework for how to keep your most experienced people engaged, so they stay with your company longer. Applying the S-Curve framework to professional growth helps managers and leaders understand why their most experienced people move on to new roles and what you can do to keep them with you longer, by helping them to grow within your organisation. Highly recommended for anyone looking to hold on to their best talent, and to be a better leader!

This is an incredibly useful book: practical, heartfelt, real and authentic. Not only is the S-Curve concept useful, but the book is broken down into chapters addressing the different stages of the S-Curve, which characterise many of our learning journeys. In each chapter, there are case studies, key take aways, and wonderful metaphors which take what might be dry theory and make it memorable and accessible. The result: a beautifully written book, practical and inspirational with intellectual and leadership nuggets peppered throughout in a confident yet humble manner. I can’t wait to share this with my teams. Well worth reading, especially if you’re a leader and enjoy developing others to become the best version of themselves..

I believe that in life frameworks help you build strong learning and foundations to make decisions. Smart Growth does exactly that. It is simple in the explanation, it provides real life examples which will support the framework but also be motivating. The most important part is that it allows you to understand that our life will be in constant change and to be able to recognize when it is time to make a jump. Very thoughtful and in my opinion a book that should be distributed in College. Congrats to Whitney Johnson and her team.

    Phase 1: The explorer phase
    - Page 34: The explorer phase is about finding out what you want to explore.
    - Page 38: When Marco Trecoce started as Four Seasons CIO, CFO John Davison encouraged him to take the time to explore what needed to be done, get to know people and create a plan.
    - Page 43: Do small tests to find out what you want to explore further.
    - Page 57: To find your why, ask people, who know you well, why they like being around you, and what their relationship with you does for them.

    Phase 2:The collector phase:
    - Page 76: Collecting experiences from her past, Whitney Johnson learned that her mother loved to cook and also wrote cookbooks. in addition, Whitney discovered that food is part of the ways that she feels and expresses love.
    - Page 79: Collect feedback. Feedback gets us to focus our attention on things we do not see or may not want to see. Children are naturally good at this. They are willing to be wrong and learn.

    Phase 3: The accelerator phase:
    - Page 105: When you learn, there is a physical change in your brain. New synapses form between cells that have not been connected before.
    - Page 122: When you are in the sweet spot, you are in control and in flow, learn continuously and can spend more of your time being.

    Phase 4: The metamorph phase:

    - Page 135: Ask yourself who you want to be.
    - Page 136: Eat healthy food, get enough sleep, and do exercise.

    Phase 5: The anchor phase:
    - Page 161: The anchor phase is a brief season of rest and reflection before you take the next leap.
    - Page 162: In the anchor phase, allow yourself to celebrate becoming the different person you set out to be.
    - Page 164: Celebrate not only when you have reached mastery. Celebrate also at the S curve launch point when you first remember to do a new skill / behaviour that you are develping. And celebrate while you are doing the new skill / behaviour.
