Voice AI start-up Replica Studios has closed a $5 million seed funding round, with the funds set to help it expand its voice library from 70 to 150 within the year.

The company, which creates AI voices that can be adapted and scripted by game developers, added local funds Carthona Capital and Mawson Ventures to its capital table through the raise, as well as US groups Venture Reality Fund and Techstars Ventures.

Replica Studios CEO Shreyas Nivas is creating the “photoshop of voice”.

Founded in 2018, the company is creating the “photoshop for voice”.

It can replicate a voice and then produce synthesised speech from scripts, with filters that control the emotion, or the mood of the voice, as well as characteristics like intonation and pacing.

While voice AI software has become relatively common in the business world, used in call centres and customer service teams, typically it’s challenging to make these voices convey emotion.

Replica’s technology is focused specifically on game developers and animators.

Its software is integrated in gaming engines and animation software including Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, Unity, iClone, Roblox, and Nvidia Omniverse.

Replica Studios CEO Shreyas Nivas said on a monthly basis, hundreds of hours of audio were created using its technology.

“Voice actors in the traditional way would never be able to full verse the metaverse, because of the dynamic nature of what that requires,” he said.

“The only way to do it is with a great voice synthesis engine.

“We’re working with dozens of triple A studios... but you don’t need to be a hardcore developer to be a creator in the metaverse. So, the integrations we have are gateways to accessing all the millions of creators.”

The company was also recently awarded Epic Games’ Megagrant.

Carthona Capital partner Dean Dorrell said Replica’s voices were so realistic, it made him doubt if the people he hears on the radio are real.

“Replica has developed what can only be described as a one-of-a-kind technology that is already seeing significant demand from leading international gaming and film studios. It has to be heard to be believed,” he said.
