Nato must join forces with friendly nations around the world to confront the growing power of China, the alliance’s chief said yesterday as western countries closed ranks against Beijing.

Jens Stoltenberg, the Nato secretary-general, said that China used coercion against its neighbours. “And, perhaps most importantly, China is a country that doesn’t share our values.”

Stoltenberg said that the alliance was urgently looking for ways to “work even more closely with partners, both in our neighbourhood but also in Asia Pacific, to address the rise of China”. Nato did not regard China as a full-blown adversary but its rise had “direct consequences for our security”, he added.
