63 St. Tammany Parish bus drivers call in sick after dropping children off at school
Sixty-three bus drivers reportedly called in sick Friday after dropping children off at school in St. Tammany Parish, Brandt Osborne, president of the St. Tammany Federation of Teachers and School Employees said.
According to Osborne, the union was unaware of the decision to strike, stating there is a no-strike clause in the union's contract.
Bus drivers say they want an increase in pay, so the school board reportedly offered them $200 more each month. However, drivers are hoping to negotiate.
Meanwhile, schools are reportedly hoping to get coaches with commercial driver's licenses to drive the students home.
Parents of children in St. Tammany Parish schools have reached out to WDSU stating they do not know how their kids will make it home today.
WDSU's Shay O'Connor will be meeting with Osborne Friday afternoon to learn more about the strike and the drivers' demands.
