Macy’s is considering a $29 million expansion project at its warehouse in Mahoning County that would create 417 new full-time jobs.

On Monday, the Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a 1.472% eight-year job creation tax credit for the department store chain.

If Macy’s approves the expansion at its Jackson Township facility, a fulfillment center would be established, increasing payroll by $16 million and keeping the current $2.1 million payroll.

Jackson Township trustee Tom Frost said he's excited about the possibility of the project and feels the township is a  great location for this expansion.

"With the two very large interstates, 76 and 80 that actually criss-cross in our Township boundaries...I think we're second to none when it comes to location," Frost said.

Frost this would project would add to the continuous flow of business expansions such as FedEx, Amazon, Mom's Meals and others. He said more traffic would benefit surrounding businesses, while also improving the township's tax base.

Sites in West Virginia and Illinois are also being considered for the project.

Neither Mahoning County planning officials nor Jackson Township Trustee Thomas Frost said they had been informed about Macy’s request before the meeting.

In September, Macy’s announced that it was hiring employees at its warehouse.

The Ohio Tax Credit Authority is a five-member board responsible for reviewing and approving applications for tax credit assistance.

The Authority also has oversight responsibilities that include monitoring and reporting the progress of approved tax credit projects.

Macy's released a statement to 21 News that said, "We've been working with JobsOhio and other agencies on a possible collaboration to add to Macy's facility in Jackson Township. We're delighted the Tax Authority approved the proposal today and look forward to sharing further information on Wednesday."

"I think that says a lot for the area we're in and the county we're in," Frost said.
