LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

GOP has given up on democracy

David Frum, former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, wrote in 2018, “If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.”

Republican policies are unpopular with the majority of Americans. Their attacks against affordable health care, their refusal to address climate change and their continual tax cuts for the rich are all unpopular; they can’t win elections running on those policies. Instead of changing their policies, they are doing everything they can to prevent people from voting. Republicans are eliminating polling places, fighting against mail-in-voting and putting unrealistic demands on people who want to register to vote. And now, President Donald Trump is threatening to send an “army of poll watchers” to intimidate people.

Trump promises to fight his impending loss in the election all the way to the Supreme Court, and he refuses to promise a peaceful transition of power if he loses his legal battle. America has been the beacon of democracy for over two centuries. We the people need to overcome the roadblocks that Republicans have put in the way of free and fair elections, and vote them out of office by the largest possible margins, if we want to save our democracy.
