Dar Al Iftaa comments on Mohamed Salah’s statement about alcohol

The Dar Al Iftaa commented on Liverpool and Egypt’s football superstar Mohamed Salah’s statements on alcohol.

Salah said in an interview with presenter Amr Adib in the “Hekaya” program on Wednesday that he did not think about drinking alcohol nor did he feel like trying it.

However he was criticized for not saying explicitly that drinking alcohol was forbidden in Islam, and his critics considered that he was trying to please the west with a neutral statement about drinking alcohol

Dar Al Iftaa said in a statement, Sunday: “The prohibition of drinking alcohol is proven by the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah and the consensus of Muslim scholars.”

It cited the Qur’an “O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”

Dar al-Iftaa also cited a hadith of the Prophet Mohammed, prohibiting drinking alcohol that says: “Every intoxicant is alcohol, and every intoxicant is forbidden (Narrated by Muslim).”

“These texts indicate that it is forbidden to drink (alcohol), because of the severity of the threat in it,” the statement added..

If the honorable Sharia commanded us not to do the forbidden things, including drinking alcohol, this happens by leaving the forbidden thing and not intending to do it, Dar Al-Iftaa said in another post on its official Facebook page.

It added in a third post: “Not thinking about doing forbidden things is an act of worship in itself.”
