Homegrown Hate: Why White Nationalists and Militant Islamists Are Waging War against the United States Hardcover – April 6, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
To better understand current events and threats, this book outlines the organizations and beliefs of domestic terrorists in the United States and how to counter their attacks on American democracy.
Who are the American citizens—White nationalists and militant Islamists—perpetrating acts of terrorism against their own country? What are their grievances and why do they hate? How can this transnational peril be effectively addressed?
Homegrown Hate is a groundbreaking and deeply researched work that directly compares White nationalists and militant Islamists in the United States. In this timely book, scholar and holistic justice activist Sara Kamali examines these Americans’ self-described beliefs, grievances, and rationales for violence, and details their organizational structures within a transnational context. She presents compelling insight into the most pressing threat to homeland security not only in the United States, but in nations across the globe: citizens who are targeting their homeland according to their respective narratives of victimhood. She also explains the hate behind the headlines and provides the tools to counter this hate from within, cogently offering hope in uncertain and divisive times. Innovative and engaging, this is an indispensable resource for all who cherish equity and justice in the United States and around the world.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"The literature on White nationalists and militant Islamists gains an important new entry examining the reasons for acts of terrorism perpetrated by American citizens against the United States. . . . Homegrown Hate's comparative approach allows for a nuanced and complex discussion which not only puts religion at the center of the analysis, but is clear in its assertion that to reduce the activity of terrorists solely to religious motivations ignores the interplay of various social and political factors, reminding the reader that even those who share these corrupted beliefs do not engage in acts of terrorism." ― Ethnic and Racial Studies
"Overall, Homegrown Hate is a valuable up-to-date resource not only for scholars and policymakers but for anyone who is looking to gain an in-depth understanding of current security threats and political violence facing the United States and many other countries around the world. . . . The book is a significant contribution to the field- deeply informative and written in an engaging manner."
― European Center for Populism Studies"A must-read for students, academics, journalists and, in particular, policy-makers and actors in security bureaucracy, who are interested in White nationalism, domestic terrorism and counterterrorism in the USA." ― Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations
"Homegrown Hate is a model of innovative scholarship. . . . Readers interested in a new perspective on the topic of religion and white nationalism will appreciate her work, as well those interested in media, comparative social movements, and religion and criminology. Finally, those seeking new models of scholarship will find Kamali’s approach to surfacing similarities between two groups who see themselves in a cosmic battle to be an invigorating challenge to how studies of religion are often done."
― Reading Religion"Homegrown Hate is disturbing, yet it is one of the most important new books detailing domestic extremists available today." ― CHOICE
"An incisive study. . . . For anyone interested in the full complexities of homegrown hate and case studies that highlight the problems and principles within each movement, the book is highly recommended." ― Populism
From the Inside Flap
In this fascinating and highly original book, Dr. Kamali expertly examines White nationalism and critically addresses the different ways in which mainstream American media, the counterterrorism industry, and the US justice system have become complicit in perpetuating this global security threat. Homegrown Hate is required reading for anyone interested in how the dynamics of racism, political violence, and religion continue to shape and challenge American society. --Mattias Gardell, Nathan Söderblom Professor of Comparative Religion, Uppsala University
This is an extraordinary and courageous work. It excavates staggering links between the violent perspectives, justifications, and methods of White nationalists and US Islamists. Through interviews and trenchant analyses, Dr. Kamali allows us to parse the political vitriol and understand the 'homegrown' phenomenon across religious boundaries. --Michael Jerryson, editor of Religious Violence Today: Faith and Conflict in the Modern World

About the author

Dr. Sara Kamali is the award-winning author of Homegrown Hate: Why White Nationalists and Militant Islamists Are Waging War against the United States published by University of California Press in 2021, which was named as a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association.
Homegrown Hate is the first book to directly compare White nationalists and militant Islamists in the United States, Dr. Kamali examines their histories and networks as well as their self-described beliefs, grievances, and rationales for violence.
In Homegrown Hate, she also analyzes and addresses how interlocking institutions of power oppress the many while maintaining systems of privilege for a select few based on an approach she defines as “holistic justice”. Holistic justice moves beyond antiracism to anti-oppression in order to redress interlocking inequities at the axis of systemic racism by contextualizing history to cultivate empathy and understanding, and networking across marginalized identities to achieve solidarity.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2021Dr. Kamali’s analysis is incredibly insightful, empathetic and nuanced. She does what many are afraid to do and explains the ideology of white nationalists and Militant Islamists from the perspective of the believers themselves, based on interviews with followers, all the while making it abundantly clear the menace these belief systems have and their responsibility for horrific violence. She draws very fascinating parallels between the two terrorist groups which are so often seen as entirely unrelated phenomenon. She takes a compelling and clear eyed look at the reality and the origins of these ideologies which is essential for it to ever really be countered and dismantled. Her writing is meticulously researched but clearly organized and explained so that it’s accesible to any lay person. I highly recommend this book for anyone who, like myself, is at a loss to explain the rising threat of domestic terrorism within the United States.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2022I wish more people would write books like this. As a society we are thought that we should fear the most threats from outside our borders while we seem to ignore the threats within our borders Dr Kamali has done a great job sharing information and statistics in a way that is easy to understand. After reading this book I wonder why I have not heard of this violent extremism happening within our own borders. This book made me open up my horizons to see truly what is happening here in the United States. great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2021Dr. Sara Kamali thoroughly explores two different groups whose actions result in similar consequences. Her point is strong that, while an outside enemy is what American citizens have been groomed to fear most, data shows that violent groups within our borders have recently caused more damage and loss of life. That this book is arriving during the shift in presidential administrations is particularly fascinating as there are many open questions about how the groups that brought in the last presidential regime will shift their strategies. This is an excellent book and Dr. Kamali is to be commended for such meticulous discourse.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2021Sara Kamali is an outstanding author. I know she has spent years (10 to be exact!) thoroughly researching so she can provide an informed examination between white nationalists and militant Islamists to the best of her ability. Sara is extremely well spoken, and you can tell by her writing. She has been a long time advocate for social justice and it is impressive to see her hard work come to fruition and I only hope her work and dedication continues to be recognized.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021Dr. Sara Kamali's book breaks new ground by shedding light on the important similarities between two domestic groups who are often not directly compared in political and public discourse: white nationalist terrorists and violent Islamists. She makes a compelling argument that both draw heavily on victimization narratives to justify their actions and to recruit followers. This book is an outstanding resource for seasoned scholars as well as students and readers new to the topic.
