Ukraine and Taiwan: Parallels and Early Lessons Learned

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted discussions and debates regarding the implications for Taiwan. Although China has long voiced a desire for “peaceful” unification with Taiwan, China continues to increase pressure against the island and has not ruled out the option of unification by force. Leaders in Beijing are undoubtedly monitoring the war in Ukraine and assessing what this means should China need to use significant military force against Taiwan. What has China likely learned from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? How could this impact China’s approach towards Taiwan and potential U.S. responses?

Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University; and Dr. Scott Kennedy, senior adviser and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at CSIS. This event will be moderated by Dr. Bonny Lin, director of the China Power Project and senior fellow for Asian security at CSIS.
