Nura Launches True Wireless ANC Earbuds With Personalized Sound

This article is more than 2 years old.

Australian headphone brand Nura was founded back in 2016 with a passion for music and a belief that the headphone market could be revolutionized by how sound is presented. Nura wanted everyone to hear music the way that the original recording artist intended it to be heard without the distortion introduced by technology.

Dr Luke Campbell and Dr Dragan Petrovic created the original Nuraphone, a multi-award-winning reinvention of the headphone which was launched following a $1.8 million Kickstarter campaign In 2018, Nura launched Nuraphones on the market promising headphones with a personalized sound in a fully immersive form.

Nuraphones worked by testing and sampling the wearer’s hearing resulting in a bespoke sound profile tailored for the listener’s hearing. At the time, Nura described the process as “like hearing in color”. I tested the Nuraphones at the launch and the difference was indeed quite staggering once the headphones were calibrated for the listener’s hearing. The difference was awesome.

By 2019 Nura launched Nuraloop to rave reviews. Nuraloop was a smaller pair of wireless earbuds using Nura’s technology but with the two earpieces connected by a piece of wire and a battery holder and inline remote. Once again, the product was well-received but the earphones weren’t true wireless which is what the market wants, especially now as so many pairs of true wireless are launched each week.

The next challenge for Nura was to recreate the same personalized listening experience in the form of a compact and lightweight true wireless earbuds that use Nura technology. After intensive development, the product is now launching. Nuratrue wireless earbuds use highly sensitive microphones to listen for otoacoustic emissions reflected from the listener’s ears. These signals containing important clues about the user’s hearing. For example, the data can reveal ears that hear at different volumes as well as the ability of each year to hear frequencies. This is particularly important if someone has, say, suffered damage to one ear.

Nuratrue contain a self-learning engine that creates a unique hearing profile to provide more depth, detail and clarity that Nura claims no other device can. By making the delivery of personalized sound more compact and portable, Nuratrue earbuds are a natural evolution for the company.

The standout feature of these new earphones is hybrid ANC (active noise cancelation) that reduces noise and blocks out most unwanted sounds. There’s a Social Mode that can enable a certain amount of outside sound to mix with the music so that the listener doesn’t feel completely isolated. Highly sensitive microphones built into each earbud not only sample the sounds to be filtered but also pick up the wearer’s voice for making clearer phone calls.

The Nuratrue earbuds have customizable control buttons that can be configured to the user’s preference. They have a battery life of six hours and a total of 24 hours of playtime using the backup charge stored in the earbuds’ charging case. Earbuds can be recharged in just two hours and if Nuratrue are used in a gym or when jogging, the sweatproof coating to IPX4 rating should protect them, no matter how hard the workout. There’s a choice of four different ear tips and two styles of wingtips to keep the earbuds securely in place.

Finally, Nuratrue use the latest Bluetooth 5.0 version and support SBC, AAC, and aptX audio codecs for high-quality sound reproduction. There’s a free smartphone app available for creating a personalized hearing profile and adjusting the settings of the hybrid ANC function.
