Tennealle O'Shannessy’s Post

Tomorrow the Adore Beauty team is downing tools and taking a Recharge Day.  It is safe to say that it's been a big 12 months for our team. They have all worked incredibly hard whilst navigating a pandemic, delivering to more customers than ever before and successfully listing the business on the ASX.   I also reflect on the special responsibility that our business has at this time. We receive feedback every day about the important role we are playing for our customers - the orders we curate, pack and send with love are gratefully received as small moments of lockdown self-care joy.   I know our team has found this lockdown more difficult, as they are trying to manage home schooling and work, missing their family and friends and experiencing lockdown fatigue. However, I’m proud each day of the resilience I have seen the Adore Beauty team demonstrate by working hard and coming to work with a positive approach, in true Adore spirit.   It’s so important we, as leaders, hear our team when they say they are tired and need to recharge. Having time to rest and recover is crucial for our mental health. In addition to encouraging the team to regularly take annual leave, we have offered all permanent team members a paid ‘Recharge Day’, a day to take time away from work to focus on self care and their mental health.   I am also proud of some other initiatives we have implemented to support our team.  We have a clear focus on mental health and wellness as we all navigate our way through this new way of working: - We are trialling a meeting free ‘focus time’ period across the business.  During this time meetings are limited, and individuals can focus on projects that require high-level thinking, such as writing, strategic thinking, analysis, coding or designing.  - We have held 56 cultural and wellness events over the last year which have created an opportunity to celebrate our wins, practice self-care and stay connected (even virtually). - Often when we join a meeting with someone from work, we will ask “how are you?” and most of the time our auto response is “I'm good thanks”. Last week our People and Culture team personally checked in on every team member to ask “how are you really?” and provide any support they need.  At times like these, the worry list can be long for all of us, there are no exceptions. But I am convinced that we will get through this, together. Leading our people with equal measures of courage, compassion and care.  I’d love to hear from my network other ways businesses are supporting their teams... This is brilliant Tennealle O'Shannessy. We have regular care packages both for team members and their families/kids during lockdown, we’ve established virtual workouts, virtual gaming, walking dates for those in single bubbles, pulse surveys testing for workload health, mental health and ergo work set ups. We’ve also reached out to our network to create spaces where they can renew their energy with us too. I feel lucky to work at Maximus International and deeply connected and cared for as a result despite 200+ days.

Love the idea of a recharge day. It’s been a tough year and re-energising the team will have so many long term benefits for the individual (most of all) but the business too long term. People make a great team and a great team make a world class business.

Terrific initiative. It’s not just the big benefits, but also the smaller benefits that matter and can make all the difference between a team that cares and one that doesn’t.

Wonderful leadership Tennealle and the Adore team. I’ve certainly found that time and the explicit permission to down tools and take some time out has had the most positive impact with employees. And leaders that genuinely care and check in with their people. It really doesn’t have to be any more fancy than that to show to care.

These are fantastic things to do Tennealle - no doubt we are all facing lockdown fatigue in Victoria, it feels like our drive and resilience that has got us through the last 18 months is waning and it’s so important to have leaders in organisations leading by example. I have certainly found that having an authentic and open culture, and one which accepts and promotes vulnerability is so important as step one - that allows team members to feel comfortable not just saying ‘yeah I’m good thanks’; it’s also so important that as leaders we are also comfortable being open to say we need to step away when it matters 💓 ps. Good luck for Monday!
