West Coast power outages, highway closed by heavy rain

9:22 pm on 2 February 2020

Heavy rain has closed State Highway 6 south of Fox Glacier and caused power cuts in the south of West Coast, and there's more to come.

The West Coast Emergency Management Group (WCEMG) says the highway from Haast to Fox Glacier is closed at Thirsty Creek, until at least 10 am tomorrow.

The closure has been caused by a washout at a culvert just south east of Haast.

All other highways in the Grey and Buller regions are open.

Power is off to Fox Glacier and south to Paringa after a fault on the 33 KiloVault line from Fox to Franz Josef.

Westpower does not expect to restore power this evening and alternative supply options are being arranged.

Fox Glacier are advised to conserve water, with a boil water notice continuing to be in place.

MetService is predicting further heavy rain to fall on the West Coast over the next 48 hours, and people are advised to keep up with the latest forecasts.

The WCEMG say staff have been sent to communities affected by the weather to provide support.

They advise motorists to consider their travel options, and to check the status of roads at the NZTA website.
